What Happens When Your Pet Goes Under Anaesthesia?

16 October 2025

We understand that the thought of your pet having anaesthesia can feel worrying. It’s completely normal to have questions about what happens and how your pet will be cared for.

The good news is that modern veterinary anaesthesia is very safe and carefully managed. Our team follows a structured process to ensure your pet is comfortable, monitored, and supported every step of the way.

How Does Anaesthesia Start?

Anaesthesia doesn’t begin with a mask as you might see in movies. Instead, we use a gentle and controlled approach.

Most pets are first given a sedative injection, which helps them relax and become sleepy. Once they are calm, an anaesthetic is administered usually through a vein, allowing them to drift into a deep, comfortable sleep.

When your pet is fully asleep, we place a breathing tube to protect their airway and deliver oxygen safely throughout the procedure.

Why Not Just Use a Mask?

Although it might seem simpler, using a mask on an awake pet is not ideal. The smell of anaesthetic gas can be unpleasant, and trying to apply a mask too early can cause stress or anxiety.

Instead, we prioritise a calm and low-stress experience. In some cases, a mask may be used briefly to provide oxygen before anaesthesia begins, but it’s not the primary method for inducing sleep.

How Is Anaesthesia Maintained?

Once your pet is asleep, we keep them comfortably under anaesthesia using one of two methods:

  • Anaesthetic gas with oxygen, delivered through the breathing tube
  • Intravenous anaesthetic infusion, which allows precise control of sedation levels

The method chosen depends on your pet’s individual needs and the type of procedure being performed.

How We Keep Your Pet Safe

Your pet’s safety is our top priority. During the entire procedure, a dedicated veterinary nurse closely monitors your pet at all times.

We continuously track important vital signs, including:

  • Heart rate and rhythm
  • Breathing and oxygen levels
  • Blood pressure
  • Body temperature

This close monitoring allows us to respond immediately to any changes, ensuring your pet remains stable and comfortable.

We also often recommend pre-anaesthetic blood testing to assess your pet’s health and tailor the safest anaesthetic plan.

What Happens During Recovery?

After the procedure, the anaesthetic is gradually stopped, and your pet is carefully monitored as they wake up.

Most pets will be:

  • Sleepy but comfortable
  • Closely observed until they can safely swallow and lift their head

We continue to monitor their temperature, comfort, and pain relief as they recover. Once they’re ready to go home, we’ll provide clear aftercare instructions to help you support them.

Every Pet Receives Personalised Care

No two pets are the same, which is why we tailor every anaesthetic plan to suit your pet’s:

  • Age
  • Breed
  • Health status
  • Type of procedure

For older pets or those with medical conditions, we adjust medications and monitoring to ensure the safest possible experience.

Reassurance for Pet Owners

We know how much your pet means to you, and placing your trust in us is something we take seriously. Our team is always happy to answer your questions and explain the process so you feel confident and reassured.

Anaesthesia may sound daunting, but with modern techniques and close monitoring, it is a safe and routine part of veterinary care.
